MD-80 Thrust Reverser Modified Design
« on: 21 December 2009 at 23:54 »

I thought I'd mentioned this before, but I can't find where I did...so I guess I didn't.  This new design of T/R is currently being demonstrated to American Airlines.  Sure hope it works out well to encourage airlines to keep the MD80 around for a while longer.

Flight Testing Results Highlights:

Peaks at 20% Fuel Burn Reduction
During the flight testing at Tucson, AZ in December 2009, the Dugan Kinetics test airplane (MD-83 tail number N789BV) produced impressive results. During climb, the flight data recorder showed a peak fuel burn reduction of 20%, over baseline. It has been illustrated that the EP-80 kit works most efficiently during the take-off and climb segments.

JT8D-219 Power from a JT8D-217c Engine
The flight testing conducted by Dugan Kinetics and the third party Flight Engineers has proven a very impressive feat for the -217c Pratt & Whitney engines. The performance improvement for the -217c is best described by it reaching -219 thrust performance, while keeping the fuel burn constant with -217c specifications.

No Drag Confirmed
The series of flights tests completed by Dugan Kinetics has confirmed there is no drag increase from the EP-80 Ejector/TR. After extensive Computer Fluid Dynamics studies, conducted with the University of Washing (Seattle, WA), the leading edge design and ejector function contributes to a sustainable performance increase and no induced drag.

Operator Specific Flight Testing
Dugan Kinetics has agreed to further test the EP-80 Ejector/TR's performance, to provide more specific data for a potential EP-80 customer. DK has developed another flight test plan based on an undisclosed operator's average stage length and operating procedures. This testing will further substantiate previous testing and provide useful information for this MD-80 operator. There is a small window for additional testing for MD-80 owners/operators, for more information please contact us here.

I see an article on flightglobal.com today, the 28th, that Dugan is starting the 2nd round of flight testing for this new reverser design.  SAS and American Airlines have expressed interest in this new design.
