Flaps Stuck @ 5 Degrees
« on: 07 June 2010 at 16:46 »

 8) Did anyone see this problem before? When retracting the flaps to the up position they will remain at 5 degrees extended if single hydraulic pump is used but it will raise to retract position only when both hydraulic pump is operative or when the auxiliary and the transfer pump is selected. ::) ::)

That was common in my experience.  Our POM contained this statement:

"On the ground, a single hydraulic system may not fully retract the flaps."

:D Bafan, was that a company tailored manual or from MDC? :)

:D Ok, I could not find something to substantiate that but will refer to the MM for further investigation. My quess is that it have to retract fully on a single hydraulic system but at a slower rate.  :D

P,

Dug through some  info from 1997 when this was addressed here.  It is, in fact, mentioned in the MM.  I don't know if chapter numbers are universal but my info says it's in MM 27-50-00, page 105.  I do not have access to a MM but that might be a place to start looking.

The inability of a single hyd sys to fully retract the flaps on the ground is acceptable...as is flap droop.  Did Douglas ever build an airplane where the flaps didn't droop at the gate ?   ;D

I think these factoids make their way to a company-tailored manual when enough pilots ask about an issue or things get written up and cause enough delays when the situation is actually OK.  The tech people probably check with the manufacturer if necessary.

Sometimes just a sentence or two in a POM can save a lot of trouble.

Ok, so as the book says it is "acceptable"

flyhappy,

I've seen a couple of similar issues resolved the same way.  115 MD80s...1100+ pilots flying them...people see things...ask questions...tech people investigate...get answers.  Everyone is better off.

I've not seen an MDC MD80 manual.  I have the MDC manual for the DC-9-32 (and two tailored manuals...DAL & EAL)...it takes crane to lift it off the table.

I'm not sure a POM should weigh that much but I think the info contained therein should be readily available to all crews.   8) 8)
